Everyone – everyone in this case being male reporters and most guys I know personally – has suddenly become aware that Ryan Gosling is the first actor in many years to sit in line for the unequivocal Adonis status that has previously fallen to the likes of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and before them Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Cary Grant, and Humphrey Bogart. This status means he is the kind of actor that comes straight to mind when people start talking about Hollywood, about superstardom, and about universal female fantasies. Even as the consummate member of the Hollywood establishment, this kind of star exists on a plane above it, coolly confident in his supremacy.
Females have been onto Gosling’s ascendance for some time, either since the release of The Notebook or Half Nelson, depending on a weighted calculation of their age and generalized personality (I’m a Half Nelson girl).
Men, though, don’t see what all the fuss is about. It has as yet been insufficiently explained in the mainstream media, so for your sake, men of the world, I’ll try to make some sense of it here.
